I spent time...

I often see my students make this mistake. Can you see what’s wrong with the sentence below?

“I spent time to watch movies last weekend.”

Here’s the mistake:

“I spent time
to watch movies last weekend.”

Here’s the correction:

“I spent time” should be followed with the -ing form of the verb.

“I spent time
watching movies last weekend.”

This sentence, when said correctly, sounds really natural and native.

I spent time
hanging out with my friends.

I spent time cleaning my room.

Here’s an example of how to use this sentence for a Speaking Part 2 task:

Describe an enjoyable day out in the countryside that you had.

Two years ago, my brother, mom, and I visited a small village in the south of Brazil. On our first day there,
we spent a lot of time hiking and taking pictures together. I even got the chance to ride a horse for the first time!
